STRUT is a night time outdoor performance and mobile projection parade by visual theatre makers MHz which comes to Aberdeen on Thurs 19th and Sat 21st October as part of City Moves’ Dance Live Festival of contemporary dance.

STRUT is a night time outdoor performance and mobile projection parade by visual theatre makers MHz featuring 5 Aberdonian local dance heroes whose personal choreographies reflect the celebratory energy of our city with Ballroom, Pop, Highland Dancing, Latin and Freestyle dance styles in the mix.

STRUT is designed as a procession of outdoor dance performances partnered with stunning large scale building projections for audiences to encounter from the streets. These talented movers and shakers were selected from a wide-ranging Open Call, with the help of a community panel. The rotating one-performer parade weave its way around the city centre with spectators watching from the pavement, waving from their windows or following the event and dancing along.

STRUT harnesses the power of freestyle dance as a universal expression of freedom, joy and sense of belonging. This upbeat show is perfect to get the neighborhood residents dancing in the streets in a celebration of local talent and community spirit.

DANCER BIO’S

LIlly

Lilly (10) lives in the Aberdeenshire area of Cuminestown. From a early age she dabbled in lots of different activities from football to swimming, highland dance, ballet and gymnastics - she even tried horse riding! This led her to find “Freestyle Dancing”. From just 4 years old she began beginner classes and quickly fell for the style of dance. A year later she was asked to join the competitive team and has never looked back.

She currently trains at her studios in Longside and Aberdeen almost 14+ hours a week when not at school. Lilly travels across the UK attending some of the country’s biggest freestyle competition events. She dedicates all her free time to dance and even has her own dance room at home to practise.

Mailén

Mailén (43) was born in Caracas, Venezuela, married to Carlos and mother of Gabriel, 16 years old, and Mia, 11 years old. She graduated in Human Resources Administration but for 7 years has been teaching Zumba to young people and adults.

She has happily lived in Aberdeen for 3 years and loves the city and its inhabitants.

“Since I was little I have danced Latin rhythms, especially salsa, which I enjoy the most. I connect a lot with people through dance and music. Music and dance allow us to drain, express ourselves, gain life, health and happiness.”

Georgia

Highland Dancer Georgia (17) was born in Australia to Scottish parents. She started lessons at 6 years old and has competed all over Australia including Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. She also dances for her local school (Robert Gordon’s College) where she helps teach younger students. Georgia hopes to take part in the Edinburgh Tattoo one day and is excited to be travelling to New York in early 2024 with her school’s Highland Dancers and Pipe Band.

“I am so excited to take part in STRUT and have all my family and friends come along to watch. I think it’s a great way for the people of Aberdeen to get involved and see how much fun dance can be.”

Claudia

Claudia (20) is a hip-hop/urban dancer. She moved to Aberdeen from Madrid, Spain, when she was 12 years oldand has lived in the city for 8 years. She lives with her Mum and Auntie in Aberdeen’s city centre where she studies marine biology at University of Aberdeen.

“I love dancing because as well as keeping me fit and getting me to how my body wants to look, it is a very freeing way of expressing myself through movement rather than with words which sometimes are not enough. I am very excited to get involved with STRUT since there aren't many opportunities for dance shows here in Aberdeen unless you're enrolled in a studio, and I miss that adrenaline while performing in front of an audience.”.
