STRUT KIDS
STRUT kids is a 10-week expressive dance and drawing programme for P5–6 pupils, culminating in a performance and interactive disco.
STRUT Kids is currently touring two schools in Glasgow and two in Rutherglen, the project is kindly supported by YouthLink Scotland and Creative Scotland.
STRUT Kids is a 10-week expressive dance and drawing programme for P5–6 pupils, led by Bex Anson, the programme blends dance games, freestyle and collaborative choreography to build confidence, creativity and connection. Children create their own movement material, devising ensemble pieces alongside tiny but mighty solos that reflect their individuality.
Part dance lab, part playground, part disco
STRUT Kids invites young people to explore what it means to take up space with pride. A dedicated drawing session extends the process beyond the body, translating movement into mark-making and simple animation.
Through shared rhythm and collective play, participants learn to support one another and move with intention.
Powered by MHz technical wizardry, the final sharing lands with big sound, live lighting, VJ visuals and bespoke props — transforming the space into an energetic celebration of friendship, fearless movement and some serious strutting.

STRUT Kids was transformational for our pupils. It nurtured confidence, strengthened relationships and gave children space to express themselves freely. It’s rare to see such a meaningful blend of wellbeing, creativity and teamwork.

Drawing workshops
We draw what we dance.
Names. Dream shoes. Favourite foods. Portraits of friends. Animal instincts.
This is not about neat lines or getting it right. It’s about bold colour, wild shapes, movement on the page. Exaggeration. Pattern. Play.
The drawings are transformed into a rhythmic animated collage, flickering behind the performance, amplifying the energy in the room
What the kids said…
I felt Proud, Fun and Inspired
I made new friends, dancing free and having fun
The teachers were nice and bubbly
I enjoyed the murder game, the dance circle and the last day
I like the dancing, games and I made new friends.

STRUT Kids created an inclusive space where every child could thrive. Our bilingual and neurodiverse pupils grew in confidence, communication and resilience. The project helped them feel valued, connected and proud of their unique strengths.
— Wendy English, DHT Annette Street Primary
The children were confident, focused and clearly proud of what they had created. In particular, the young person I support really came into his own during the ribbon freestyle section — it was wonderful to see him expressing himself with such confidence and joy.

Building on the acclaimed premiere of STRUT as part of Tramway's Dance International Glasgow 2021, local theatre makers MHz return to bring a children’s version of the show to Govanhill. This time around they’ll be joining forces with the pupils of Cuthbertson Primary School where MHz and dance artists Nancy Jacinto and Jennifer Taggart have been delivering 10 weeks of creative dance workshops.
STRUT Kids is designed as a procession and dance party partnered with a celebratory light show for audiences to encounter from the playground and school hall. Children from the school will be invited to show off their personal choreographies harnessing the power of freestyle dance as a universal expression of freedom and joy.
In an afternoon of family fun, the playground and school hall will host dance performances, interactive games, a special appearance from STRUT performer Joshua Macmillan - and delicious free snacks on offer from Milk Café.
